Video: Pussy Riot – “Putin Lights Up the Fires”

On Friday three members of Russian feminist punk collective Pussy Riot — Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Mariya Alekhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich — were convicted in a Moscow court of hooliganism driven by religious hatred and sentenced to two years in jail.

The sentence dates back six months ago when five members of the group stormed an altar at the Christ the Savior cathedral in Moscow and filmed a video railing against Russian President Vladimir Putin’s leadership and the Russian Orthodox Church’s support of it.

Despite the harsh sentence which has outraged many in the international community and has brought global focus on Putin’s ongoing crackdown of human rights in Russia, Pussy Riot issued a new single, “Putin Lights Up the Fires.” London’s The Guardian has edited the new song to a montage of Pussy Riot members and their supporters.
